Mortal Kombat 11 (#MK11) ANNOUNCED at #TheGameAwards 2018!

Long have we waited for it, and now, it is finally here.

While the worldwide gaming community celebrated the launch of Super Smash Bros Ultimate, another surprise was being unveiled elsewhere. At last night’s Game Awards 2018 show, the gaming industry celebrated its latest achievements at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California, as the crowd and the entire Internet looked on in awe and excitement.

Much to the delight of the Mortal Kombat community, the creators of the franchise, known collectively as NetherRealm Studios, were in attendance at The Game Awards. When Mr. Ed Boon, the creative director of NRS, took to the stage at the Microsoft Theater, everyone fought to control themselves as hope for a new Mortal Kombat game was re-ignited.

However, some were also prepared for the worst-case scenario about the continued absence of news since E3 2018. NRS refused to break their silence about their next product since June 2018, prompting a collective suspicion from fans that the company was planning to break away from its continuous cycle of churning out their next game once every two years, alternating between their trademark MK franchise and its DC-based sibling, the Injustice series.

Then a familiar logo flared to life on the expansive screens that overlooked the audience…the silhouette of a black dragon entrapped within a circle. What followed was a trailer confirming what many had waited almost four years to see since the 2015 release of Mortal Kombat X.

Mortal Kombat 11, the eleventh iteration of the bloody fighting franchise, is slated for an official release…on April 23, 2019. The familiar cycle of welcoming a new NRS game once per two years therefore continues, to the immense relief of MK enthusiasts worldwide!

Furthermore, in addition to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam (PC) platforms, the game is making its way to the Nintendo Switch, a twist nobody could have predicted as a Mortal Kombat title had not made its way to a Nintendo console since the Nintendo Wii version of Armageddon in 2007, which was well over a decade ago.

Naturally, the reveal of Mortal Kombat 11 has opened the floodgates for a ton of questions. One such question concerns whether or not the variation system from Mortal Kombat X will carry over to its predecessor this April. But…according to the following description from the video above:

“The all new Custom Character Variations give you unprecedented control to customize the fighters and make them your own. The new graphics engine showcasing every skull-shattering, eye-popping moment, brings you so close to the fight you can feel it. And featuring a roster of new and returning Klassic Fighters, Mortal Kombat’s best in class cinematic story mode continues the epic saga over 25 years in the making.”

Whether or not this “Custom Character Variations” system takes a page from the book of MKX, where each character had three variations that awarded them different abilities, remains unclear at this time. Perhaps it may lean more in Injustice 2’s direction, primarily focusing on aesthetics while players level up their characters to strengthen their various stats.

Another observation by the community is the inclusion of a scene where an unnamed figure is caressing an hourglass with his back turned towards the screen. This is perhaps a forecast of what to expect from MK11’s story mode, which will continue from where the epic saga left off in Mortal Kombat X (as confirmed by Dark Raiden’s role in the trailer above).

A community reveal event is scheduled for January 17th. Pre-orders for MK11 are available as of today, and should you choose to do so, you will be gifted with an access code for - get ready for this - Shao Kahn, as well as the opportunity to participate in a beta!

Undoubtedly the reveal trailer has left you eager to see more, and so you shall! Should you visit the pre-order page for MK11 at right now, you’ll come across a library of incredibly detailed screenshots highlighting MK11 gameplay. Don’t expect to see any new characters, though, as these pictures only include the characters seen in the trailer: Scorpion and Raiden.

Check them out, they are amazing!
