"We have nothing that we're announcing." @noobde de-confirms MK11 announcement in an interview with @giantbomb
2018 was an exciting year for E3 attendants all around. Many announcements concerning games in development were shared with us, and the FGC was equally as blessed. We've been given release dates for a multitude of titles, as well as a firsthand look at the gameplay for each title. These titles include Smash Bros Ultimate, Soul Calibur 6 and Dragonball FighterZ (which is already available but making its way to the Nintendo Switch later this year).
Unfortunately, for those hoping for any news concerning the next Mortal Kombat title, those hopes have been dashed. Last night, Mr. Ed Boon (@noobde), creative director of NetherRealm Studios, appeared on a live stream with @giantbomb along with four other game developers to discuss not only the events of E3, but also their own history in the gaming industry.
When questioned about the lack of an announcement concerning their next game, Boon finally lets the axe fall.
"We have nothing that we're announcing."
The anticipation of an announcement concerning the next entry in the Mortal Kombat series is completely understandable. Since 2010, NetherRealm has followed a pattern that Boon is surprised that his fans caught on to (or so he says in the interview). It was at E3 2010 that the first gameplay footage for Mortal Kombat 9, which would serve as a reboot to the entire franchise, was shared with the worldwide gaming community. The game itself would release a year later, in April 2011.
Following MK9, gameplay footage for NRS's sibling fighter, Injustice 1, would be shared at E3 2012, before releasing a year later in April 2013. This pattern would continue with their next two titles, with MKX on display in 2014 and releasing in 2015, then Injustice 2 surfacing in 2016 before releasing in 2017. However, unlike its three predecessors, Injustice 2 released not in April, but in May, signifying a slight deviation from NetherRealm's pattern in game releases.
Now, it appears that the company has completely broken away from that pattern, but for what reason?
One must recall from a previous Watchtower broadcast with the NRS team that they've disclosed plans to provide a longer period of support for their latest title, which was Injustice 2 at the time. Perhaps the lack of an announcement for their next game is symptomatic of this decision. If so, then that begs the question: other than Season 2 of the Injustice 2 Pro Series, which began with Combo Breaker last month, what additional support can we expect for the game now that it has entered the "Legendary Edition" phase?
One must realize, however, that while Mr. Boon has no news to share with us at this time, this does not necessarily mean that an announcement for a new game is not coming in the near future, nor that said game is not in development at this time. That is not a blind hope, either; before dropping the truth bomb (pun NOT intended), Mr. Boon himself states that he's "chomping at the bit to talk about stuff," but cannot do so at this time.
You can find his full interview with Giant Bomb in the video below. He makes his appearance at around the 2:04:40 mark, but is not questioned about Mortal Kombat 11 until around 2:06:00. Give it a listen.
