SAMURAI SPIRITS Reveal Trailer by @SNKPOfficial. Release Date set for 2019.

Last week, a countdown went into effect on SNK's official website to prepare fans for the reveal of their next game. With no clues pointing towards its identity, the Internet scrambled to draw conclusions on what would be revealed when the curtain was lifted.

The countdown ended today, on September 10th...and the final result is a glorious one, indeed. Sharpen your swords and your minds, because SAMURAI SPIRITS is coming to consoles (and perhaps PC) in 2019!

Samurai Spirits, or Samurai Shodown as it is known in Japan, appears to mark a return to the roots of a franchise released for arcades in 1993. Since its initial entry, the series would go on to see additional releases for the Neo Geo systems and other consoles such as the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo, and in later years it would be re-released for the modern consoles.

The franchise has also spawned a remarkably large number of games, some of which were mobile exclusives. In 2006, Sabertooth Games created a card game adaptation of Samurai Shodown V, along with King of Fighters 2006, for its UFS (Universal Fighting System) game.

The series is set in 18th century Japan during the Sakoku era, which marked an era of discord for the country. Characters inspired purely by Japanese culture are drawn into 2D sword-fighting battles against one another. The franchise has become legendary for its use of their "POW" or "rage" gauge, a meter option that enables combos but will only increase if the player sustains damage.

In recent years, SNK has started an esports program in support of any of its titles featured at tournaments across the globe. It has yet to be confirmed if the new iteration to their franchise, Samurai Spirits, will receive similar support, but its incredibly likely to be the case. As of now, King of Fighters XIV, currently available for Steam and PS4, is benefiting from this particular program.

We look forward to additional details concerning the release of Samurai Spirits! To stay updated, follow our blog and @SNKPOfficial on Twitter.
